Wahkiakum County's beauty and bounty make it the perfect place for fishing, cycling, camping, windsurfing, canoeing or kayaking, viewing wildlife or taking a scenic drive. Birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts come to view our White-Tailed Deer refuge, watch our Bald Eagles and see our majestic Elk herds.

Vista Park - Skamokawa

If you are looking for a picnic spot, or a place to camp. Vista Park is ideal. With RV hook-ups, yurts in the mountains and a great beach, this park is the perfect location for a family get-away. Boating - Elochoman Slough Marina

This beautiful little marina on the Columbia River in Cathlamet, Washington, is the perfect secret get-away for boaters. Located midway between Astoria, Oregon and Longview, Washington, the marina provides overnight, long-term and year-round moorage for pleasure or commercial craft. Skamokawa Center on the Lower Columbia River in historic Skamokawa, Washington (just 90 minutes from Portland) is a place of incredible natural beauty, with wildlife in native habitats, islands to explore, ancient Sitka spruce swamp, and hidden places of perfect solitude. It is a world that remains much the same as Lewis and Clark saw it 200 years ago.

History

Wahkiakum County's history is the history of America. From the Native American Kath-la-met tribes to the adventures of Lewis and Clark and the first Scandinavian settlers, Wahkiakum rich and interesting history can be found in every corner of the county. Wahkiakum is a history buff's dream. Where else can you follow the path of Lewis and Clark in a canoe, stay in a 100 year old Bed and Breakfast and explore one of the first settlements in the Pacific Northwest? The landscape, the churches and the town itself remind us of the days when logging and fishing industries sustained the area. Old canneries still line the river, antique stores harbor special treasures and our museum and archive center are must see attractions! Wahkiakum County also boasts the highest number of Lewis and Clark heritage sites. Come explore history in Wahkiakum County!

Julia Butler Hansen Heritage Center

Julia Butler Hansen was a Representative from Washington; a member of the State House of Representatives from January 1939 until November 1960, elected to Congress (November 8, 1960-December 31, 1974) and was a resident of Cathlamet, Wash., until her death there on May 3, 1988. The home itself is one of the oldest in the area, and has been recently restored to it's original glory. Filled with antiques and original items, the home is now available for tours on Thursdays and Saturdays. See the works of Maude Kimball Butler, Julia's mother, who began painting the daily activities of early life along the Columbia. Her works cover the walls of the home and are a virtual story in pictures of life long ago. The house is located at 35 Butler Street, Cathlamet. Check out the website: www.wahkiakumfoundation.org

Appelo Archives Center is a unique collection of historical photos that chronicle the history of Wahkiakum County and Naselle, Washington. Visitors are welcome to browse and purchase unique and stunning images that capture the culture and history of the area. This collection of stories and photographs is truly a local treasure. Redmen Hall home of the RiverLife Interpretive Center owned and operated by the Friends of Skamokawa Foundation

Stop by the RiverLife interpretive center and walk into history as you marvel at photo's, listen to docents and learn about the history of the once bustling town of Skamokawa. Climb the 88 steps up to the bell tower and experience a panoramic view of the Columbia.

Suggested donation  is $2.00 for Adults and $1.00 for Children/Students

Deep River Church

About two miles up Deep River Road between Gray's River and Naselle is the beautiful Deep River Lutheran Church. A hidden piece of early Scandinavian architecture that was lovingly restored. Across from the church is a small cemetery, with graves from the early 1800's. The Finnish gravesites tell tales of the hardships of our earliest settlers. Sons of Norway Helgeland Lodge- 444 State Route 4, Puget Island, Cathlamet 98612

Norwegians were the first Puget Island Settlers. They soon formed the Sons of Norway Helgeland Lodge and built the Norse Hall in 1937, to create a place to meet and dance! Traditional Scandinavian events are still enjoyed here. The structure is 40 x 85 Feet, and two stories. It features a dining area, kitchen , stage and dance floor. Available for Weddings, Reunions, Memorials and limited rentals.

Lewis and Clark Sites

Wahkiakum County has eight sites which educate the visitor on the travels of the Corps of Discovery. Learn about their historic adventures in our area with sites at County Line Park, Cathlamet Marina, Puget Island Ferry Landing, Julia Butler Hansen Refuge, Vista Park, Meserve Park and Altoona. Pioneer Church

This beautiful church, built in 1895, is the most prominent landmark in Cathlamet. The uniquely designed church sits in the middle of town and its tall tower peeks above the rooftops. It is used for weddings, art shows, musical revues and other occasions, and is a common photo opportunity for tourists. The Church is located right across the street from the Visitors Center. Contact the Pioneer Community Association for more information.

The Grays River Covered Bridge

One of the most scenic drives in the state brings you to the Grays River Covered Bridge, the last one in public use in the state. Built in 1905, the bridge is still used everyday. The 100 year old historic landmark hosts a Covered Bridge Festival in August. Locals celebrate the local treasure with music, food and games! Everyone is welcome. "The Spirit of Chief Wahkiakum" This 18-person Trolley car will run tours from the Cathlamet Marina to area attraction including, Skamokawa Kayak & Town Center the Julia-Butler Hansen Wildlife Refuge, Puget Island and will visit many other historical sites and attractions. The beautifully restored Trolley will also be used for tours and shuttle services at our festivals and events and may also be booked privately for your special event! The Trolley is owned and operated by the Wahkiakum Community Foundation & The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce.
